Quality Antique Eastern Islamic Ottoman Solid Silver Mustard Pot C1920

A beautifully rare Ottoman solid silver mustard pot. It is tested as high grade silver. I would date it to c1920. It has been superbly designed and is in superb condition being free from dings splits chips cracks and repairs. The glass liner is free from chips cracks and repairs, the odd tiny nibble. It measures approx. 2.75 inches (7cm) tall by 2 inches (5cm) across and weighs 64 grams with the liner and 50 without it. A superbly made very high-quality piece.

This Ottoman solid silver mustard pot dates to c1920 and takes a bulbous silhouette supported by three spherical ball feet. The piece exhibits an all-over chased finish in a bright silver colour palette, decorated with dense arabesque foliage patterns and floral medallions. It includes a hinged lid topped by a rounded spherical finial, a small spoon aperture on the rim, and subtle hinged hardware. Measuring 7 cm tall by 5 cm across, this small silver vessel functions well as a decorative table accessory for a sideboard top in a dining room or living space. It brings traditional Islamic metalwork craftsmanship to contemporary interior displays.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Ottoman silversmiths produced refined tabletop vessels for domestic use and export. These items often blended European functional shapes, such as mustard pots with hinged lids, with traditional Islamic ornamentation.

Islamic tableware of this era was crafted from solid silver alloys, often near sterling purity or standardized regional hallmarks. The surfaces were decorated using techniques like repousse, chasing, and engraving to create detailed relief patterns.

Authentic pieces frequently bear stamped hallmarks, such as the Ottoman tughra mark or silver purity stamps. Additional indicators include hand-chiselled decorative borders, period-appropriate hinges, and traces of historic silver tarnish within recessed areas.

Small metalwork pieces can be arranged on a dining sideboard, inside a glazed display cabinet, or alongside books on a mantelpiece. They serve as intricate textural accents when placed near glass, dark wood, or modern ceramic decor.

Dust regularly with a non-abrasive microfiber cloth and apply a specialized silver foam or polish gently to remove oxidisation. Avoid harsh chemical dips or abrasive scrubbers that can strip hand-engraved details or original patination.
