For Sale by FB Antiques
Description

Dutch Marquetry Bureau Bookcase

Item Code: LC1469

A highly decorative Dutch marquetry bureau bookcase, extensively inlaid throughout with floral, foliate, urn and scrolling motifs in contrasting timbers. The impressive proportions and rich decorative scheme give the piece considerable presence, while the combination of enclosed cupboard storage, a fitted writing interior and generous drawer space makes it both practical and visually striking.

The upper section is surmounted by a shaped double-arched cornice above a pair of mirrored cupboard doors, each framed with finely worked floral marquetry. The sides are similarly decorated with elaborate urn, flower and foliate inlay.

Below, the fall-front bureau is centred with a large marquetry panel depicting an urn issuing flowering branches and scrolling foliage. Opening the fall reveals a fitted interior comprising pigeonholes, small drawers, shaped compartments and a central cupboard, together with a green writing surface.

The lower section incorporates three long drawers, flanked by boldly shaped bombe sides, all richly decorated with further floral marquetry and fitted with decorative brass handles and escutcheons. The piece is raised on shaped feet with a decorative apron beneath.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Dutch marquetry bureau bookcases were developed by skilled woodworkers in the Netherlands who mastered intricate floral and foliate wood inlays. Characterised by double-domed cornices, curved bombe lower sections, and fall-front writing desks, these pieces served as multifunctional furniture for affluent merchant homes.

These pieces typically feature a solid oak carcass overlaid with rich walnut veneers. The decorative marquetry utilises contrasting fruitwoods, holly, boxwood, or stained timbers to create floral designs, while brass escutcheons and handles adorn the drawer fronts.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut marquetry inlays with subtle variation, thick hand-cut veneers, and solid oak drawer linings joined with hand-cut dovetails. Original brass hardware will show signs of hand-casting and gentle oxidisation around fixings.

A large bureau bookcase acts as a focal piece in a formal study, library, or drawing room. Pairing the rich wood tones with neutral wall palettes, understated modern seating, and simple contemporary accessories prevents the space from feeling overcrowded.

Keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent the veneers from lifting or bleaching. Clean surfaces gently with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply high-grade beeswax sparingly along the grain to protect the timber.
