Senneh Saddle Cover

19th century
Description

A rare and beautiful piece, this saddle cover from northwest Iran is very finely woven and has a breathtaking palette. The tone of the blue field is wonderful but it is surpassed by the sublime yellow that intrudes from the sides. Note the fine border that separates this from the blue field, a subtle touch but one that enhances the overall look. The red green combination is repeated in the innermost border. This is a serious collector’s item and a very fine piece.

Fair condition, there is evidence of old moth damage in the blue field with some repair which is clear from studying the back. The threads that appear in the central slit are new and added purely to maintain its shape.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Senneh saddle cover, traditionally known as a ru-khorjin, is a hand-knotted Persian equestrian textile woven in western Iran, specifically contoured with a top opening to fit over the pommel or cantle of a saddle.

Senneh textiles were crafted using finely hand-spun wool pile knotted on a cotton or wool foundation, utilising natural vegetable dyes to create rich indigo blues, madder reds, and soft yellows.

Authentic Senneh pieces are recognised by their fine asymmetrical knots, extremely low pile, stiff handle, and distinctive arch or cutout shape designed for horse trappings.

These small geometric textiles are frequently displayed as mounted wall art in perspex floating frames, laid over console tables, or used as central decorative mats on large surfaces.

Keep antique wool textiles away from direct sunlight to prevent dye degradation, vacuum lightly using suction only without a rotating brush bar, and consult a specialist conservator for washing.
