Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Wall candelabra, also known as wall appliques or sconces, originated in 17th-century Europe as functional devices to elevate candles and reflect light off reflective metal finishes. During the 18th and 19th centuries, botanical motifs such as wheat sheaves, grapevines, and acanthus leaves became popular decorative elements across French and Italian metalwork.

Traditional wall sconces were predominantly crafted from cast brass, bronze, or wrought iron, which were subsequently finished with mercury gilding, fire gilding, or gold leaf lacquer. These processes created a warm golden appearance designed to withstand candle heat while preventing rapid oxidisation.

Authentic fixtures typically exhibit natural oxidisation in crevices, signs of hand-chasing or hand-soldered joins, and subtle surface wear where the underlying base metal shows through the gilding. Additionally, genuine period pieces often feature non-standardised screw threads or mounting hardware consistent with historic metalworking techniques.

A pair of gilt sconces can be hung flanking a central wall mirror, positioned above a sideboard, or installed in a narrow hallway to introduce warmth and sculptural texture. They work effectively as focal decorative accents in traditional, transitional, and eclectic room schemes.

Care for gilt metal involves light dusting with a dry, soft microfibre cloth or soft brush to prevent dust accumulation. Abrasive polishes, liquid cleaners, and water should be avoided, as they can strip delicate gilding and damage the underlying patina.
