Antique 9ct Gold Mounted Amber Cheroot Holder in Engraved Silver Case

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique 9ct Gold Mounted Amber Cheroot Holder in Engraved Silver Case

A particularly attractive early 20th century English amber cheroot holder, housed within its original finely engraved sterling silver case.

The holder is fashioned from richly coloured translucent amber of warm honey-orange tone, with a gently faceted form and flattened mouthpiece. It is finished with a solid 9 carat gold collar, fully hallmarked with the Birmingham assay mark and 375 standard mark.

The fitted cylindrical silver case is finely hand engraved with trailing ivy and foliate decoration against a textured ground, with polished reserves and decorative borders. The case has a hinged domed cover and suspension ring, originally allowing it to be carried from an Albert or watch chain. The interior is silver gilt, providing an attractive contrast to the engraved exterior. Fully hallmarked with date code for 1927

An attractive and increasingly collectable gentleman's smoking accessory, particularly appealing for the combination of richly coloured amber, solid 9ct gold and finely engraved silver.

Dimensions:

Length: 7 cm (2.76 in)

Width: 1.5 cm (0.59 in)

Depth: 1.5 cm (0.59 in)

Condition:

Good antique condition. Clear hallmarks. The amber remains attractive with a rich colour.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A cheroot holder was designed to hold small cigars or cheroots during smoking, preventing tobacco stains on fingers and keeping loose tobacco out of the mouth. Popular in the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, they were often crafted from precious materials and carried in custom silver cases as status symbols.

High-grade natural amber or meerschaum was typically selected for the holder mouthpiece due to heat resistance and comfort. The rims were frequently mounted with 9ct or 15ct gold, while the protective outer cases were crafted from hand-engraved sterling silver.

Authentic pieces generally feature full British hallmarks on both the silver case and the gold mount, indicating the maker, metal purity, assay office, and year of manufacture. Natural amber from this period often displays subtle natural inclusions or swirl patterns under magnification, alongside genuine signs of age-related wear.

These compact pieces are ideal for displaying in glass curiosities cabinets, styled atop a tray on an office desk, or framed inside a shadow box alongside other antique pocket items. They also serve as decorative accents when arranged on a bookshelf or tray.

Clean the silver case gently with a soft microfibre cloth and a specialised silver polishing cloth, avoiding liquid chemical dips. Amber should be wiped softly with a damp cloth and kept away from direct heat, harsh chemicals, or prolonged sunlight to prevent surface crazing.
