Antique Ushak Runner

19th century
Description

Fabulous colours on this antique Ushak runner from the late 19th century, woven with green to blue toned main field dyes, warm reds and oranges famous of the Ushak region.  A great smaller and hard to find size, ready and available.

Runners from Turkey of this proportion were more often commissioned for large homes in the West in the late 19th century, they have been used but well looked after.  Their pile is thick and glossy, with soft wool you would expect from these densely piled antique Turkish runners.  The weave on Ushak rugs, carpets and runners is generally rather coarse using bigger knotting than Persian rugs.  but they have wonderful drawings and open designs.

To view this antique Ushak runner in situ, we happily travel all over the UK showing our inventory to private clients and interior designers.

We are happy to reserve this Ushak runner for you, and you can arrange either a home viewing or to see it at our barn showroom in Crondall, Surrey.

Interior designers you are very welcome to reserve this Ushak runner for your project too, please click on reserve to request this service.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating from the town of Usak in Western Anatolia, Turkey, Ushak rugs are historical textiles dating back to the Ottoman era, characterised by soft hand-spun wool, geometric or floral motifs, and distinctive natural dye palettes.

These runners are hand-knotted using hand-spun sheep wool pile bound onto a wool or cotton warp and weft foundation, utilizing natural plant-based dyes and Turkish double knotting techniques.

Authentic pieces demonstrate hand-knotted pile construction, subtle colour variations known as abrash from hand-dyed wool batches, symmetrical Ghiordes knots visible on the reverse side, and uniform wear consistent with age.

A vibrant runner creates structural line and visual warmth when placed in long entryways, hallways, or narrow corridors, providing contrast alongside timber floorboards or stone tiling.

Vacuum regularly using suction only without a rotating beater bar, employ a high-quality non-slip underlay pad to protect the foundation, and utilize specialist textile restorers for periodic cleaning.
