Globe Wernicke Mahogany Barrister's Bookcase

1900 - 1920
Description

A good example of a mahogany stacking bookcase dating from the early 20th Century. It has three leaded glazed sections with 'up and over' sliding doors. The top section has the original Globe Wernicke maker's label.

It is a good quality piece standing on a nicely finished plinth with metal strapping and the mahogany has a lovely rich colour. As is typical with these pieces each section splits apart so it can be easily transported.

It is in very good condition for its age and displays well. It is not without some minor marks and knocks but no major damages or anything detrimental. The bookcase has been cleaned and gently polished and is ready for use.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Developed in the late nineteenth century, barrister bookcases are modular sectional storage units originally designed for legal professionals. Their stackable design allowed lawyers to easily transport their libraries as their practices expanded or relocated.

These pieces are typically constructed from hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, featuring glass panel doors. The signature mechanism incorporates metal side bands and internal equalizer rods that allow doors to lift upwards and slide horizontally back into the unit.

Authentic examples often contain paper labels or printed trade marks inside individual sections. They also display characteristic metal interlocking side bands, distinct corner joinery, and patented door mechanisms unique to the manufacturer.

Position the bookcase in a study, hallway, or living space as a focal storage unit for literature, ceramics, or curated collectibles. Combining rich timber and leaded glazing with contemporary artwork or neutral walls creates a balanced contrast between traditional craftsmanship and modern design.

Clean the timber surfaces using a soft microfiber cloth and apply beeswax polish sparingly to preserve the finish. Treat leaded glass gently using a non-abrasive cleaner applied to a cloth rather than sprayed directly, and ensure the door glide mechanisms remain clean and free of debris.
