History: In 1903 Frederick John Mayers, a carpet designer with a studio in George Street, Kidderminster, purchased the land from James Ward, the Younger, and designed Tintagel which was built in 1904. Mayers had previously owned 54 Hill Grove, Kidderminster, which he had commissioned the famous architect, C F A Voysey to design for him in 1899 (noted in the book ‘C F A Voysey – Architect and Designer 1857 – 1941’ by Brandon-Jones). Mayers was greatly influenced by Voysey when he designed Tintagel and there are many Voysey inspired features, for example the tapered buttresses, the roof lines, the windows including window catches, the paneled doors, the pierced heart details in the staircase and cupboard work etc. He also asked some of his artist friends to design certain features in the house, including the beautiful William Morris inspired cast iron fireplace in the dining room and the oriel window in the sitting room. He named the house Tintagel knowing the original (possibly there was a Pre-Raphaelite William Morris association as well).

Mayers was an associate of the Council of the Society of Designers which included may of the Arts and Crafts Movement designers and craftsmen inspired by William Morris including the architect C F A Voysey. They were represented by The Studio magazine which did valuable work in the creation of intelligent public appreciation of applied art, and made vocal the modern Renaissance (Arts and Crafts Movement) which provided the seeds from which most of the later continental movements in decorative art have grown. Charles Voysey, despite being first and foremost an architect, also liked designing the whole furnishings of his houses including carpet design which formed the close friendship between Voysey and Mayers.
