Early Georgian Walnut Bureau

18th century
Description

DESCRIPTION

Dating from the first half of the 18th century, this attractive walnut bureau has a fall front opening to reveal a well-appointed fitted interior, with an arrangement of small drawers and pigeonholes beneath shaped valances and a practical writing surface. Below are four graduated long drawers, fitted with brass handles and escutcheons, the whole raised on bracket feet.

A practical piece of Georgian furniture offering both a useful writing space and generous drawer storage.

DIMENSIONS

Height: 105cm

Width: 90cm

Depth: 50cm

CONDITION

Structurally sound and in good usable antique condition, with marks, knocks, wear and historic repairs commensurate with age and use. There is noticeable sun fading to the walnut, particularly to the left hand side. The backboards and external brassware have been replaced. One key is present and operates one of the small internal drawers. There are no keys for the remaining locks.

Overall, an attractive and practical Georgian bureau with a pleasing aged appearance and plenty of period character.

As an antique or vintage piece, signs of age and use should be expected and are part of its character. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report. If you would like further information or additional photographs, we are always happy to help before purchase. If any dimensions are critical, please check these with us before purchasing.

ABOUT ALSO ANTIQUE FURNITURE

Thank you for viewing this piece from Also Antique Furniture. We carefully select antique furniture and decorative objects for their quality, craftsmanship, character and individuality. Our tastes are broad, and we’re happy to be led by the piece rather than a particular period or style. Above all, we choose things we genuinely admire and would be happy to have in our own home. Every item is individually inspected, researched and professionally photographed, with clear descriptions and honest condition reports to help you buy with confidence.

We believe good furniture should have a long life. Choosing antique keeps well-made furniture and existing materials in use, and we favour sympathetic restoration that preserves the patina and character acquired over generations.

VIEWING

Viewing is welcome by appointment at our premises in North Yorkshire, on the border with Lancashire. If there is anything you would like to know before purchasing, we are always happy to answer questions or provide additional photographs.

DELIVERY & COLLECTION

Collection is welcome by arrangement. We can usually arrange delivery throughout mainland UK using trusted independent couriers, charged at cost. As a general guide, delivery for an average-sized chest of drawers is typically £80–£100. Larger items and more remote locations will incur higher charges. Most deliveries are completed within approximately two weeks, although faster delivery may sometimes be available. Please contact us with your postcode for a delivery quotation before purchasing.

AUTHENTICITY & CONDITION

We strive to describe every item as accurately and honestly as possible. Statements regarding age, attribution, origin and provenance are offered in good faith and represent our professional opinion based on the information available at the time of listing.

As all of our items are antique or vintage, signs of age and use should be expected. Old repairs, knocks, wear, variations in colour and other minor imperfections are often part of a piece’s history and character. Where condition affects its integrity, appearance or usefulness, we will endeavour to make this clear in the description.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Early Georgian walnut bureau is an 18th-century writing cabinet featuring a sloped drop-down lid resting on retractable lopers above a chest of graduated drawers. Popularised in Britain during the early 1700s, these pieces served as compact writing workstations and secure document storage.

Early Georgian bureaus were typically constructed with an oak or pine carcass veneered in figured walnut or burr walnut panels, often accented with herringbone or cross-banded inlay. Hand-cut dovetail joints, brass drop handles, pierced escutcheons, and bracket feet are characteristic structural features.

Authenticity can be verified by examining hand-sawn drawer linings, uneven hand-cut dovetail joints, and original brass hardware with hand-threaded fixings. Look for natural patination, minor shrinkage splits along veneer seams, and hand-planed secondary timbers on the cabinet back.

A walnut bureau functions as a versatile piece in contemporary spaces, serving as a compact home office workstation, hallway accent, or living room storage cabinet. Pairing deep walnut tones with neutral wall palettes, modern artwork, and subtle brass lighting creates a balanced aesthetic.

Preserve the original surface patination by dusting regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the furniture piece away from direct heat sources, radiators, and prolonged sunlight to prevent veneer lifting and wood shrinkage.
