George II Burr Walnut Bureau Bookcase, Circa 1730

A fine and imposing George II burr walnut bureau bookcase, circa 1730, of particularly attractive colour and figuring and displaying many of the characteristics associated with the finest London cabinet work of the period.

The upper section is surmounted by a moulded architectural cornice above a pair of doors inset with shaped and bevelled mirror plates, framed by elegantly scrolling walnut mouldings. The doors open to reveal an exceptionally well-fitted interior comprising an arrangement of pigeonholes, document divisions, small drawers and a central figured walnut cupboard.

The lower bureau section features a beautifully figured burr walnut fall front with feather-banded borders, opening to reveal a fitted writing interior arranged with pigeonholes, drawers and a central cupboard flanked by architectural pilasters. Of particular interest, the central cupboard can be removed, providing access to a concealed compartment within the fitted interior.

Below are four graduated long drawers, retaining ornate period-style brass handles and escutcheons, the whole raised on shaped bracket feet.

The quality of the veneers, elaborate fitted interiors and overall architectural treatment are characteristic of high-quality George II cabinetmaking, in the manner of Giles Grendey.
