Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Wirework fire guards gained popularity during the Georgian and Victorian eras, designed primarily to contain flying embers and sparks from open coal or wood fires. Their curved construction allowed them to sit snugly around the hearth while providing a protective barrier, particularly in domestic nurseries and family living spaces.

Traditional period fire guards feature a solid cast or drawn brass rim and base frame, supported by woven or braided iron and steel wire mesh. Decorative components often include turned brass ball feet, support stays, and subtle lattice or swag patterns within the wire weave.

Authentic period fenders display signs of hand-woven wire construction, period joinery such as hand-riveted frame joints, and natural patination on the brass rim and feet. Original pieces often show slight irregularities in the wire mesh pattern and authentic surface wear on the bottom edge where it rested against the hearth.

A wirework fender can be positioned directly in front of an open fireplace or an ornamental cast iron fire surround to ground the hearth area. It also functions as a low architectural surround in traditional or eclectic living rooms, providing visual texture without obstructing the view of the fireplace interior.

To maintain the piece, gently clean the brass elements using a soft cloth and a specialised metal polish, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners. The wire mesh section should be dusted regularly with a soft dry brush or vacuumed using a soft brush attachment to prevent ash accumulation and oxidation.
