We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the early to mid-18th century during the reign of King George II, a walnut bureau is a writing cabinet featuring a sloped fall-front lid situated over a chest of drawers. The hinged flap opens to reveal an internal arrangement of small drawers and storage compartments used for correspondence.

These bureaus were traditionally constructed using native or imported walnut veneers, frequently incorporating decorative burr walnut, crossbanding, and featherband inlays over a solid softwood or oak carcase. Key structural indicators include hand-cut dovetail drawer joints and cast brass backplate handles.

Authentic period bureaus exhibit signs of historic craftsmanship, including hand-planed timber surfaces, thick veneer cuts, asymmetrical dovetailing, and natural oxidation within drawer linings and under the base. Original brass fittings will typically show hand-chased details and authentic surface wear.

A Georgian walnut bureau can function as a focal writing station or storage piece in a modern study, hallway, or living room. Setting the warm timber tone against soft neutral walls and complementing it with contemporary task lighting creates a balanced contrast between historic and current design.

Maintain the timber finish by regularly dusting with a soft, dry cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the item situated away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber movement, cracking, and veneer lifting.
