Continental Silver Snuff Box

1900 - 1920
Description

A pretty and beautifully decorated Continental silver SNUFF BOX ~ probably German? The lid and all sides are cast with deeply raised decoration of scrolls and leaves, with anthiemon around the edges, whilst the lid is centred by a small oval portrait of a young bewigged lady wearing strands of pearls. The interior is gilded, and it marked twice: firstly underneath with the ‘original’ silver hallmarks; and secondly to the inner rim, with the English import marks for London 1925 ~ though the box may be a little earlier? 8.5cms wide.

** Please note that this interesting and decorative snuff box is not on view in the shop; for further details call 07860 818212 or e-mail kerry@quietstreetantiques.co.uk

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Continental silver snuff box is a compact, decorative container manufactured in mainland Europe, traditionally designed to hold finely ground tobacco powder during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

These boxes were typically crafted from solid silver or silver gilt, often featuring repousse metalwork, engine-turned patterns, and inset miniature portraits painted on ivory, vellum, or card protected by glass.

Authentic pieces display historical hallmarks or makers marks indicating silver purity, alongside period-correct construction details such as tight hand-fitted hinges and hand-chased ornamentation.

Small silver boxes can be placed on a desk, bookshelf, or vanity tray alongside leather-bound books and glass objects to add texture and historical detail.

Clean silver gently with a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh liquid chemicals that could penetrate the bezel and ruin the portrait miniature beneath the glass cover.
