Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Silver inkstands, also known as standishes, were developed in the seventeenth century as desktop trays designed to hold ink bottles, pens, and sealing wax. Throughout the eighteenth to twentieth centuries, they evolved into prominent symbols of status and craftsmanship, frequently presented as commemorative gifts or kept in formal study environments.

Traditional high-end inkstands feature a base crafted from sterling silver, often hallmarked to guarantee purity. The ink reservoirs are commonly constructed from heavy cut glass or crystal fitted with solid silver collars and hinged or lift-off caps.

Authentic British silver inkstands bear official assay office hallmarks stamped into the metal, including the lion passant mark for sterling purity, an assay office symbol, a date letter, and a makers mark. Silver components on glass reservoirs should feature matching hallmarks.

A solid silver inkstand functions as a refined focal point when placed on an executive office desk, library bureau, or entryway console table. Paired with vintage leather stationery accessories, books, or traditional desk lamps, it introduces structure and historical character to modern work spaces.

Silver components should be polished periodically using a soft cotton cloth and specialist silver polish to prevent oxidisation and tarnish. Glass inkwells should be hand-washed separately in lukewarm soapy water, ensuring all dried ink residues are carefully rinsed out without immersing silver fittings.
