Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Designed during the nineteenth century, Hamilton bottle stands were created to hold torpedo-shaped aerated mineral water bottles, which had rounded bottoms to keep the cork moist and prevent gas leakage. Because these bottles could not stand upright on flat surfaces, purpose-built metal or wooden stands were used on dining tables and in bars.

Most nineteenth-century stands were constructed using electroplated base metals such as nickel silver or brass, featuring soldered wirework frames, circular support rings, and a central cup to support the curved base of the bottle.

Authentic Victorian examples typically feature makers marks or electroplate stampings such as EPNS or EPBM on the base or rim, alongside characteristic hand-soldered wire joints and appropriate wear patterns consistent with late nineteenth-century manufacture.

These compact silver-plated pieces make ideal decorative accents on a bar cart, sideboard, or bookshelf, serving as intriguing conversational items or unique holders for cylindrical glass vessels and desk accessories.

Clean gently with a soft cloth and specialised silver polish, avoiding abrasive pads or harsh chemicals that could strip the thin layer of silver plating and expose the underlying base metal.
