This small Georgian decorative dish is an 18th-century First Period Worcester soft-paste porcelain patty pan, produced around 1765 in the English Country House style. The piece has a circular form with an underglaze blue and white finish, featuring a central painted peony motif, an insect motif, and a patterned diaper border along the rim. Visible details include a glossy glaze, delicate hand-painted cobalt blue floral decoration, and a restored chip to the rim. It measures 11.8 cm wide and 3.5 cm high. In a modern home, this porcelain dish provides a decorative accent when displayed on a sideboard top, entryway table, or open shelving unit in a living room or dining area. It functions well as a small decorative accessory, holding items like loose trinkets or standing alone as a cabinet display piece to complement traditional interior aesthetics.

FAQs

First Period Worcester porcelain, often referred to as the Dr Wall period, spans from the founding of the Worcester factory in 1751 until 1783. This era is renowned for producing high-quality soft-paste porcelain decorated with underglaze blue oriental patterns and detailed florals.

Early Worcester pieces were crafted using a soft-paste porcelain formula that incorporated soaprock (steatite) from Cornwall. This unique composition rendered the ceramics highly resistant to thermal shock, making them suitable for hot foods and baking dishes.

Authentic pieces often display a greenish or greyish translucency when held to light, along with underglaze blue factory marks such as the open crescent or disguised Chinese character marks. The underglaze blue decoration typically exhibits slight bleeding into the glaze.

Displaying small porcelain items on clear stands within open shelving, curating them inside glass-fronted cabinets, or grouping them alongside neutral ceramics adds historical depth and texture to contemporary spaces.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and a mild wash-up liquid, avoiding harsh chemical cleansers or abrasive sponges. Never place 18th-century ceramics in a dishwasher or microwave, and handle with dry, clean hands.
