Antique Inlaid Mahogany Sheraton Style Escritoire Desk

1900 - 1920
Description

A wonderful antique inlaid mahogany Sheraton style escritoire desk. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1910 period.

This is of superb quality, it is a useful and very charming piece. The mahogany has acquired a gorgeous patina and colour tone over the years, this stands on turned and fluted legs, the drawer fronts all have inlaid satinwood banding. The drawers also have fine, hand cut dovetailed joints and high quality brass handles.

We have had the top re-leathered with a hand coloured russet hide with hand tooled edges. We have also had this sympathetically re-polished to preserve the patina and character. It is in great condition for its age, with some normal surface wear remaining beneath the polish, commensurate for age.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Sheraton style escritoire desk is characterised by slim proportions, tapered or fluted legs, and clean neoclassical lines popularised in late 18th-century England. These compact writing tables often feature raised rear galleries, small stationery drawers, and fine wood marquetry or stringing inlays.

Constructed predominantly from fine mahogany, satinwood, or rosewood, these desks frequently feature secondary drawer linings made of oak or pine. The writing surfaces are typically inset with gold-tooled leather, accompanied by brass drawer handles and fine timber stringing.

Look for slim, fluted or square tapered legs, fine dovetailed drawer construction, and hand-cut timber joinery underneath the carcass. Authentic period pieces or high-quality revival examples exhibit subtle hand-worked inlay, solid brass hardware, and natural wear along drawer runners.

Position the escritoire in an alcove, hallway, or home office to create a functional workspace without overwhelming the room. Pair it with a simple contemporary chair, neutral wall tones, and minimal desk accessories to highlight the wood grain and geometric silhouette.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, wiping in the direction of the grain. Protect the leather writing inset from direct sunlight, heat sources, and moisture to prevent drying or cracking.
