A Pair of 18th Century Tin Glazed Dishes.

Each with a rounded and lobed nonagon rim, falling to a flat centre. The rear with a raised foot rim. The dishes decorated in a manganese and yellow palette, showing Chinese gentlemen walking and resting in a flower filled landscape. The centre of the dishes showing a nobleman and attendant in the same landscape.

Date circa 1740.

Height 2 3/4 inches, 7cm.

Tin-glazed earthenware, often referred to as faience, majolica, or Delftware, is ceramic pottery covered in an opaque white glaze produced by adding tin oxide to a lead glaze base, frequently decorated with hand-painted oxide pigments before firing.

These pieces were formed from low-fired earthenware clay, dipped in an opaque white tin-glaze suspension, and painted by hand using mineral oxides such as manganese for purple-brown tones and antimony for yellow prior to a single or secondary kiln firing.
