This Victorian sterling silver vinaigrette is hallmarked for Birmingham 1855, with the maker's mark belonging to Edward Smith. The rectangular form is crafted in a silver colour with a polished finish and features an attached suspension loop, a hinged lid, and intricate foliate scroll engraving across the top surface, along with a blank central cartouche and dotted border decoration. The photograph also shows a small metal loop on the side, subtle engraved linework highlighting the lid's edge, and minor surface oxidation within the recesses of the floral pattern. Measuring 2 cms across by 1.5 cms, this compact accessory weighs 8.3 grams and contains a silver gilt interior grille beneath the lid. In a modern interior, this piece sits neatly on a sideboard top, dressing table, or vanity surface as a decorative cabinet display item or a small collection highlight. The diminutive scale allows it to fit easily into display cabinets alongside other antique silver items, serving as an interesting conversational object of mid-nineteenth-century British silversmithing. Its historic charm suits period-style studies, living rooms, or traditional bedrooms where small antique curiosities are gathered and admired close up.

A Victorian silver vinaigrette was a small decorative container designed to hold a sponge soaked in scented oils or aromatic vinegar. These portable boxes were carried to mask unpleasant urban odours and prevent fainting during the nineteenth century.

These items were predominantly crafted from sterling silver or silver-gilt, often featuring detailed hand engraving, chasing, or bright-cut decoration. The interior typically contained a hinged, pierced grille that held the aromatic sponge securely in place.

Authentic British pieces bear official hallmark stamps detailing the makers mark, purity mark, assay office mark, and a date letter. Mid-nineteenth-century items will also usually feature the monarchs head duty mark.

Smaller vinaigrettes fitted with suspension rings can be styled as functional pendant necklaces or added to charm bracelets. Larger examples make elegant decorative additions to dressing table trays, trinket displays, or shadow boxes.

Gently wipe the exterior with a specialised silver polishing cloth to remove tarnish, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can damage intricate engraving. Keep the interior dry and store in a low-humidity environment away from direct sunlight.
