Antique Platinum, Diamond and Pearl Necklace, 15ct Gold, Edwardian Circa 1910, Art Nouveau

1900 - 1920
Description

A wonderfully delicate Edwardian diamond and pearl necklace, dating to circa 1910 and beautifully hand crafted in platinum and 15ct yellow gold.

The graceful openwork pendant has a lightness and refinement characteristic of fine jewellery from the Edwardian period. At its centre is a sparkling old cut diamond surrounded by five creamy pearls, creating a pretty flower-like arrangement.

Around this central cluster, the pendant is formed as four open circular sections decorated with finely worked foliate motifs. The little leaves are set with twenty-four rose cut diamonds and finished with delicate millegrain detail, bringing texture and gentle sparkle to the design. Four further pearls are placed amongst the diamond-set foliage, beautifully balancing the composition.

The combination of pearls and old cut diamonds against the cool white tone of platinum creates an exceptionally elegant jewel. The reverse reveals the traditional 15ct yellow gold backing, while the pendant is completed by its fine platinum Figaro-style chain.

There is a delightful contrast between the pendant's intricate workmanship and its wonderfully wearable proportions. As the photographs show, it sits beautifully at the neckline and would make a very special antique necklace for a wedding or evening occasion, while being sufficiently delicate to wear more informally.

A romantic and beautifully preserved example of Edwardian jewellery, with lovely movement and detail throughout.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian jewellery, crafted between 1901 and 1915, is defined by delicate garland motifs, lightweight openwork designs, and the prominent introduction of platinum settings paired with diamonds and natural pearls.

Jewellers during the Edwardian era frequently combined platinum with 15ct or 18ct gold backings, setting fine natural pearls and diamonds into intricate filigree structures.

Authentic pieces exhibit fine millegrain borders, hand-cut diamonds, lightweight openwork platinum construction, and appropriate period hallmark stampings on chains or clasps.

A delicate Edwardian pendant complements modern eveningwear or clean-lined tailored clothing by providing subtle focal detail along understated necklines.

Pearls require careful handling away from water, perfumes, and chemical cleaners, while the platinum structure can be wiped gently with a soft microfibre cloth before storing flat in a soft-lined box.
