Superb Queen Anne Oak And Elm Small Chest Of Drawers C. 1700
Status:Reserved Seller:Webberley Antiques
An absolutely stunning small oak and elm chest made in c. 1700 and with original timbers throughout.
.
The main carcase is oak, the drawer fronts are elm and all has developed a really beautiful and rich colour and fantastic natural patina.
.
The drop handles are 18th century, correct for period and sit in the correct original holes there are some small other marks here and there on the drawer fronts which indicate other handles have been added and then removed at some point many moons ago.
.
The drawer linings are oak original with substantial dovetails to front and nailed up backs with extended original bottom boards and the drawers have rebated runners at the sides - consistent and correct construction for a late 17th century chest – and run smoothly.
.
The stile feet are original and continuous with the main carcase frame. The panels are fielded and the back retains its original hand azed and roughly shaped oak boards. Early craftsmen did not waste time or... money on the timbers that would not be visible and although the chest is one piece, here the craftsman has used offcuts of oak rather than full long boards to cover and finish the back. Some old worm holes – very few – and long dead. Minor losses and knocks and marks consistent with a chest of over 300 years of age and which has always been well cared for and loved.
.
A provincial piece with some cracks and a patched rear corner to the top (very old, well blended and going nowhere) and a very small repair to the shaped bottom apron.
.
The chest is extremely pretty, and very tactile and original. It really sits down well, speaks of its age and history and is a beautiful example of a simple and practical early English chest made in or shortly before the reign of Queen Anne.
Absolutely stunning, really catches the eye, and will look beautiful, add atmosphere and quality to any room.
.
.
Dimensions are:
.
29.25 inches high, 34.25 inches wide and 20 inches deep. The drawer heights are top: 5 inches, middle: 6 inches and lowest: 7.5 inches.
I describe and photograph my pieces accurately and with the aim that on arrival each will exceed expectations.
I operate a full refund guarantee and am always happy to give free, honest and friendly advice.
