Description

This is an exceptional bag, woven in fine countered soumak technique on the face and plain-weave on the back.

Woven by what is thought to be the finest weavers within the Qashqa'i Confederacy, the Kashkuli tribe, during the second half of the 19th century and in great condition.

Bags of this shape were used for containing long items such as water-pipes, wooden tent-pegs or drop-spindles and were hung-up in the black tent during sedentary periods.

FAQs

Qashqai tribal bags were woven by nomadic confederacies in South-West Persia to store tools, personal belongings, spices, and water-pipes during seasonal migrations. These functional items showcased the weavers technical skill and clan motifs.

These bags are constructed using hand-spun sheeps wool dyed with natural plant and mineral pigments. Weavers utilised flatweave, soumak (extra-weft wrapping), or pile techniques, bound at the edges with heavy wool cords for structural durability.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-spun yarn with natural dye colour variations known as abrash, flexible handles or loops, complex geometric or stylized animal iconography, and dark selvedge wrappings typical of the Fars region.

Small Persian textiles can be professionally mounted on custom linen boards, framed behind non-reflective glass, or displayed on stands in alcoves and bookshelves to introduce tactile history into modern rooms.
