A fine 19th Century British marine oil painting on canvas depicting the bustling harbour waters of North Shields on the River Tyne during the Victorian era.

The composition portrays traditional fishing barges drawn up along the tidal shoreline, merchant sailing vessels and line ships resting at anchor, together with figures engaged in everyday harbour activity. Dominating the distant shoreline is the distinctive white tower of the historic North Shields Low Light, one of the most recognisable navigational landmarks of North-East England.

Executed in oil on canvas, this atmospheric work successfully captures both the commercial importance and visual character of one of Britain''s most significant nineteenth-century ports. A pleasing cabinet-sized marine painting with excellent display presence, presented in an attractive gilt frame.

Historical Context

The scene depicts North Shields ...Harbour at the mouth of the River Tyne, one of Britain''s foremost centres of shipbuilding, fishing, coal exportation and maritime commerce during the Victorian period.

Visible in the background is the North Shields Low Light lighthouse, historically forming part of a pair of navigational lights used by mariners entering the Tyne. By aligning the Low Light with the corresponding High Light, vessels could safely navigate the deep-water channel through the often hazardous river entrance.

The foreground vessel bears the registration code ''BK40'', associated with the Berwick-upon-Tweed registry district, reinforcing the painting''s connection to the maritime communities of North-East England.

This painting is offered in the manner of Bernard Benedict Hemy, one of the most respected marine painters associated with North-East England.
