Date: Late 19th to early 20th century.

CATALOGUE NOTE
The fisherman wears a dark hat, green knitted jersey and red neckerchief. His bearded face and concentrated expression convey the character of a working seafarer.

He carefully removes a curved hook from a large fish. A wicker fishing basket and additional fish appear aboard the boat.
Beyond, choppy grey-green seas, seabirds and a distant sailing vessel complete the atmospheric composition.

He painted coastal landscapes, marine subjects and fishing communities, exhibiting at the Royal Academy and Royal Institute.
He participated in Newlyn Art Gallery's opening exhibition in 1895.

By 1901, Carter was living with a fishing family at Sennen Cove. He increasingly painted in oils during his later career.
