Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A Victorian extending chamberstick is a portable candle holder designed for domestic use, featuring an articulated scissor or lazy-tongs mechanism that allows the candle socket to extend outward. Many examples include an integrated vesta case, which served as a dedicated compartment for holding matches.

These items were predominantly constructed from solid brass or copper, utilizing cast and stamped sheet components joined by steel or brass rivets. The mechanical linkage required precise metalwork to ensure the extending arms moved smoothly without collapsing.

Authentic period brassware displays natural wear around moving joints, uneven oxidation in recessed areas, and hand-finished edges. Look for stamped Victorian registration marks, patent numbers, or maker marks often impressed into the base or underside of the match compartment.

An antique brass chamberstick serves as a functional decorative object when styled on an office desk, mantelpiece, or bookshelf. Placing it alongside leather-bound books, framed monochrome prints, or dark wood furniture complements its historic character.

Dust the item regularly with a soft dry cloth to prevent dirt accumulation in mechanical joints. Avoid harsh chemical polishes that strip away historical patination, and remove stray candle wax by applying warm water rather than scraping with metal tools.
