Antique Uzbek suzani, silk on a yellow cotton ground.

Circa 1900.

Suzani are silk embroideries that have been woven in Uzbekistan for many hundreds of years, they are treasured family items woven by the ladies of a family usually to celebrate a wedding. They are then used to decorate the inside of the Yurt. They are embroidered in silk on strips of cotton which are then joined together to make the complete item. The suzani is then backed with fine cotton to give it strength and body.

This suzani is beautifully embroidered in silk of a yellow cotton ground, the design has a central medallion surrounded by floral designs. It was probably woven in Southern Uzbekistan, Shahrisabz region. The suzani would have been used as a cover for a bed or wall hanging.

The condition is fair with only very slight wear and a some historic repairs and staining. The condition is reflected in the price.

The suzani is ready for display.

A suzani is a type of embroidered and decorative tribal textile traditionally made in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and other Central Asian nations by brides as part of their dowry.

Traditional Suzanis are typically crafted with a foundation of hand-woven cotton or linen fabric, decorated using dyed silk thread worked in various embroidery stitches such as chain, buttonhole, and basm stitch.

Authentic antique pieces typically feature hand-spun base fabrics, natural or early synthetic dyes showing subtle tonal variations, hand-embroidered motifs with slight irregularities, and signs of age such as oxidation or wear on the silk threads.

These decorative hangings are commonly mounted on a wall as a focal artwork, draped over the back of a sofa, or used as a textured throw to introduce vibrant colour and rich heritage into modern spaces.

Preservation requires keeping the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent dye fading, avoiding hanging by direct tension, and periodically consulting a textile conservator for professional cleaning rather than washing at home.
