Antique Saryk Turkmen Torba in a Classic 'Salor' Design, Circa 1880.

19th century
Description

Size: 4ft 7in x 1ft 1in (140 x 34cm) excluding tassels.

Antique Saryk Turkmen torba with a latch hook gul design, this design is best known for the Salor examples that are published in most Turkmen books.

Circa 1880.

These torba were used to decorate the side of a camel during a Turkmen wedding procession, these were prized possessions and formed part of the wedding dowry. The were kept as heirlooms and displayed inside the yurt. This example is of fine weave and has survived in excellent condition. The torba has depressed warps and a firm handle.

The torba is in excellent original condition with very slight wear and excellent full pile. The original indigo blue tassels are still attached, these are typical of Saryk weavings.

An old collectors label attached to the reverse calls this 'a late Salor weaving'. An interesting item of scarce design worthy of further study.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A torba is a small, shallow rectangular storage bag or trapping traditionally hand-woven by nomadic Turkmen tribes of Central Asia for use inside yurts.

Turkmen textiles are predominantly hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun sheeps wool for both the pile and foundation, often dyed with natural madder root and indigo.

Authentic 19th-century Saryk pieces display distinct octagonal geometric motifs known as guls, dense wool knotting, deep madder red or purplish-red tones, and finely executed geometric border designs.

A torba functions as framed or mounted wall art, bringing deep colour palette and historic texture to modern living rooms, hallways, or study spaces.

Wool textiles should be kept away from direct sunlight and damp environments, dusted gently with a soft brush, and cleaned only by specialist antique textile conservators.
