Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Named after Prince Albert during the Victorian era, the Albert watch chain emerged as a functional accessory for securing a pocket watch to a waistcoat. The T-bar passed through a waistcoat buttonhole, anchoring the chain while the swivel clasp held the pocket watch securely inside a pocket.

Antique watch chains were predominantly crafted from sterling silver, gold, or silver-gilt. They featured heavy linksmost commonly curb, double curb, or Belcher stylesfitted with hand-assembled swivel clasps, T-bars, and decorative heraldic or wax-seal fobs.

Authentic British silver Albert chains usually carry hallmarks on multiple components, often stamped on every individual link, the T-bar, and the swivel clasp. Look for the lion passant sterling mark, town marks, date letters, and subtle signs of rub-wear where links meet.

Beyond traditional pairing with a waistcoat and pocket watch, contemporary collectors frequently wear silver Albert chains as choker-style necklaces or wrap-around wrist bracelets. The decorative fob can also be recontextualised as a focal pendant on other chains.

Gently wipe silver chains with a soft jewellery polishing cloth to remove surface tarnish. Avoid dipping the piece in chemical liquid cleaners, as these can strip away dark natural oxidisation within the recessed areas of carved fobs and link joins.
