Antique Victorian English Walnut Inlaid Pier Cabinet Display
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:London City Antiques
A very elegant antique Victorian pier cabinet in finely figured walnut, decorated with delicate satinwood inlay and finished with restrained ormolu mounts. The cabinet has a refined architectural feel with clean lines and balanced proportions, typical of good mid Victorian English design.
The inlay is particularly well executed. Across the frieze runs a central panel of classical scrollwork and floral motifs, carefully set into the walnut and framed with fine line stringing. The uprights are decorated with vertical inlaid panels featuring stylised foliate designs, giving a sense of height and symmetry. The use of contrasting timbers highlights the detail without overpowering the piece and shows a confident, skilled hand.
The walnut veneers are of very good quality with strong figuring and a warm rich tone. The top is crossbanded and edged, adding depth to the surface while the sides are veneered to match and maintain a consistent finish all round.
Ormolu mounts are applied to ...the corners, adding a subtle decorative accent and a touch of formality. These mounts are well cast and typical of the period and complement rather than dominate the cabinet.
The single glazed door opens to reveal shelved interior space, designed for displaying ceramics, glass or decorative objects. Pieces like this were traditionally placed between windows or within alcoves, often in pairs, where they served both as display furniture and as a way to balance a room.
This is a good, honest English example. The restrained use of ormolu, the architectural form and the quality of the walnut and inlay are all characteristic of mid Victorian English cabinet making, rather than the more elaborate and heavily mounted French equivalents of the period.
