These Edwardian solid sterling silver novelty pin cushions depict detailed dog figures pulling mother of pearl shell carts on two spoked wheels. The smaller dog features a curly tail while the larger dog stands solidly, and both are linked to their respective wheeled carts via fixed metal shafts. The natural iridescent cream and mother of pearl shells form open bowls, each housing a brown velvet cushion insert where the original textile has deteriorated over time. The silver elements exhibit a polished metallic finish with realistic chased texture on the canine figures, along with slight structural lean in the harness traps. Measuring 4 cm in height and 12 cm in length for the larger piece, these novelty items suit placement upon a living room sideboard top or dressing table display surface. They function practically to hold pins while serving as decorative tabletop conversation pieces in a traditional interior setting.

Silver novelty pin cushions gained widespread popularity during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. Silversmiths produced small functional objects shaped like animals, vehicles, and household items, combining sewing utility with decorative craftsmanship for the dressing table or sewing basket.

These items are constructed primarily from sterling silver or silver plate, often paired with carved natural elements such as mother-of-pearl, bone, or tortoiseshell. The cushion insert is generally made of velvet, wool, or sawdust-filled silk.

Authentic pieces usually feature British hallmark stamps or makers marks on the silver frame, indicating the assay office, silver purity, and date letter. Construction details like hand-fitted shell components and age-appropriate oxidisation around joinery points also indicate age.

Small silver objects can be styled on a sideboard top, arranged inside a glass display cabinet, or incorporated into a vanity table arrangement alongside other historical metalwork and jewellery boxes.

Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth. Use a specialized silver polishing cloth on metal surfaces while avoiding contact with organic mother-of-pearl shells or textile cushions, as harsh liquid polishes can cause irreversible damage.
