Description:

Antique English pewter plain rim plate by Wood & Michell of London, England, who worked 1742 - 1754. The plate has a good touch mark to the reverse, along with a 'London label', 'crowned X' and a 'superfine hard metal' mark .

The front rim bears a very well struck 'Borough Arms' for the town of Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England.

Condition:

The plate is in good condition with a lightly polished finish to the front, there are some knife marks to the front showing signs of use. The reverse is also lightly polished.

Repairs: There are no repairs.

Size: 9.125 inch diameter (23.20cm).

Cotterell: Old Pewter: Its Makers and Marks - OP5277.

During the Georgian period in Britain, pewter was the primary material for durable domestic tableware before creamware and mass-produced ceramics became widespread. Plates and chargers were cast in moulds and finished on a lathe, serving both utilitarian and presentation purposes in domestic and civic settings.

18th-century English pewter was predominantly a metal alloy composed of tin, combined with small quantities of copper, lead, or antimony to increase strength and durability. High-grade pewter contained minimal lead, producing a soft grey lustre when polished.

Authentic pieces usually display stamped makers touchmarks, location marks, or town crests on the rim or underside. Genuine items also show surface wear consistent with age, soft knife marks from original usage, faint turning lines from manufacture, and a dark grey oxidisation pattern.

Pewter plates can be leaned against backdrops on open shelving, displayed in a traditional Welsh dresser, or mounted in a vertical grouping on a wall. Their matte grey finish complements dark timber furniture, exposed brick, and muted neutral wall tones.
