Small cast silver animal figures gained significant popularity during the Victorian and Edwardian periods, continuing through the mid-20th century as desk ornaments, paperweights, and cabinet displays for collectors.

These pieces are typically produced using the lost-wax casting method or traditional sand-casting techniques, utilizing sterling silver (925 standard) which provides both durability and a high-lustre finish.

Authenticity is determined by examining maker marks, date letters, and silver purity hallmarks stamped onto the metal, alongside assessing the weight, casting seam lines, and natural patina indicative of age.

Small silver objects can be styled as focal points on bookshelves, mantelpieces, or coffee tables, adding metallic texture and a touch of classic character to contemporary spaces.

Sterling silver should be cleaned periodically using a specialised non-abrasive silver cloth to remove tarnish, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can strip away desirable oxidised details in recessed areas.
