Description

A superb rare English antique solid sterling silver sealing wax holder and combination vesta case. It is hallmarked for London with the date letter being rubbed. I would date it to c1880-1900. It has been superbly designed and has been engraved with a motto VI ET ARTE and the double family crest Cross-Ferguson (possibly marking the coming together of the families via marriage). The square open end holds a sealing wax stick the other end holds matches. It is in superb condition being free from dings splits holes and repairs, just the odd faint mark. It measures approx. 3 inches (7cm) long by 0.75 inch (1.9cm) square and weighs 32 grams. A very unusual example.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A vesta case is a small pocket-sized container historically used to carry wax matches safely before the widespread availability of safety matches.

Vestas were predominantly crafted from sterling silver, brass, base metals, and occasionally featured enamel, bone, or mother-of-pearl embellishments.

Authenticity is verified by examining hallmarks for the makers mark, metal purity standard, assay office, and date letter, alongside assessing period-appropriate wear and construction.

These small collectables work well displayed in glass cabinets, arranged on decorative trays on coffee tables, or curated within a study or library setting.

Silver should be stored in a dry environment and cleaned sparingly using a specialist non-abrasive silver cloth to maintain the metal surface and patina.
