A wonderful early 20th-century school cabinet originally made for the Art Department at Highgate School, north London.
Made from solid oak, the cabinet has has hand-painted lettering “Highgate School – Art Dept” and “Still Life”, along with a series of classroom instructions such as “Handle All Subjects With Clean Hands Only With Care” and “Last 15 Mins Of Each Period For Clean Up.”
The cabinet would originally have been used in the school art room for the storage of still life objects and teaching materials, which students would use for drawing and painting studies.
Inside, both the upper and lower cupboards are fitted with shelving for storage, while the exterior retains its beautifully painted instructional text and original brass key escutcheons.
Likely dating from the early 1930s, this is a fantastic piece and would work well as a cupboard or display cabinet, in a home, studio, shop, or interior. The paint has been retouched making it newer addition
