Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

These lamps originate from mainland Europe and are often adapted from 18th or 19th-century church altar candlesticks or carved wooden architectural pedestals. They feature hand-carved timber coated with gesso and gold leaf gilding, reflecting Neoclassical or Baroque design influences.

Craftsmen carved the central column and base from hardwood or softwoods such as lime or pine. A layer of gesso, made from chalk and animal glue, was applied to smooth the wood before applying thin sheets of gold leaf, which were subsequently burnished with agate stone.

Authentic pieces display natural wear to the gilding, frequently revealing the red or grey clay bole underlayer beneath. Look for hand-carved tool marks, original wood shrinkage cracks, and physical evidence of historical conversion from candles to electrical wiring.

Position the lamp on a clean-lined sideboard or console table to create contrast between the ornate carvings and contemporary architectural lines. Pair it with structured fabric shades, such as pleated cotton or linen, to balance traditional detailing with modern textures.

Dust the carved surfaces regularly using a dry, soft-bristled feather duster or painters brush. Avoid water, liquid polishes, and chemical solvents, as moisture can dissolve the water-gilded gesso layer and permanently ruin the gilded finish.
