This large Amsterdam School pricket candlestick originates from the Netherlands around 1900. Fashioned from hand-hammered metal with a dark brown finish, the object displays an original chocolate colour patination over its constructed surfaces. The top features a narrow metal spike projecting from the center of a wide, flared drip pan. Below this basin, a vertical stem extends downward through a central riveted collar and expands towards a lower section. The support terminates in a wide, dome-shaped base bearing a decorative pattern of small circular piercings arranged in a cross formation above four outwardly curving feet. Measuring 55 cm high and 26 cm wide, the piece stands with a commanding presence suited for domestic display. Placed upon a sideboard top within a living room, dining room, or hallway, the candlestick functions as an architectural decorative accent. The dark metallic tones integrate easily into traditional or modern interior schemes as a sculptural lighting accessory from the early twentieth century.

Amsterdam School metalwork emerged in the Netherlands during the early 20th century, characterised by expressive architectural shapes, structural rivets, hand-hammered patinated surfaces, and bold geometric profiles.

Antique copper prickets were typically crafted using hand-hammering and metal-raising techniques, joined with exposed copper or brass rivets, and topped with a raised central pin to hold thick wax candles.

Authentic pieces often exhibit visible hand-tooling marks, layered construction with period-appropriate riveting, natural patination in recessed areas, and distinct expressionist or geometric forms typical of the era.

A large copper pricket works well as a sculptural accent on a sideboard, dining table, or hearth, where its deep metallic tones contrast against neutral walls or natural timber surfaces.

To preserve historic patination, clean gently with a soft dry cloth or soft-bristled brush, avoiding harsh chemical polishes or abrasive pads that strip away aged surface oxidation.
