Antique Tekke Turkmen 9 gul torba / mafrash.

Circa 1870 or earlier.

This small Tekke Turkmen torba / mafrash is a small bag used for keeping personal belongings in, it was usually hung up inside the tribal yurt. The torba is of very fine knotting, note the bowed shape caused by years of use inside a yurt.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A torba is a small, shallow, rectangular woven storage bag produced by nomadic Turkmen tribes, traditionally used inside the yurt to hold household items or suspended from pack animals during transport.

Tekke torbas are hand-knotted using finely spun wool pile on a wool foundation, coloured with natural dyes such as madder and indigo, and often retain a plain flatweave wool backing.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display precise geometric gul motifs, extremely dense knotting, supple wool, rich natural dye shades, and intact woven structural elements like the original backing.

These woven trappings are often mounted on walls as textile art, displayed inside clear acrylic presentation boxes, or laid across console tables and shelves to add texture and depth.

Keep the textile away from direct sunlight and high humidity, vacuum gently on a low setting without a rotating brush bar, and consult a professional textile conservator for specialized cleaning.
