Antique Caucasian Bordjalou Kazak

19th century
For Sale by Siez Gallery
Description

This colourful South Caucasus rug features some unusual combination design hybrid elements. The main border is formed by rows of diagonal bars typical of Gendje & shahsavan rugs, each enclosing latch-hook squares, while the field is divided by an ivory star framework. This structure creates three rectangular panels: two rendered in a soft green and a central panel in deep madder red. The result is an eye-catching composition that balances minimalism with dynamic patterning, creating a distinctive antique piece that will enrich anyone’s collection.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating from the South Caucasus region, Bordjalou Kazak rugs are distinguished by their bold geometric motifs, saturated dye palettes, and structured multi-panel central fields.

These rugs are hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun wool for both the pile and foundation, coloured primarily with natural plant and mineral dyes.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-knotted wool foundations, natural colour variation known as abrash, symmetrical knotting, and traditional geometric tribal iconography.

A Caucasian rug functions as a grounded textural accent in contemporary spaces, contrasting strong geometric patterns against natural timber floorboards and modern furniture.

Regular gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, immediate spot-cleaning with mild water solutions, and periodic rotation prevent uneven wear and preserve the natural wool fibres.
