1900 - 1920
Description

Size: 8ft 1in x 4ft 8in (247 x 141cm).

Antique Turkish or Eastern European reproduction of an 18th century Caucasian 'blossom' rug.

Circa 1920.

This rug is an outstanding reproduction of the well-known 18th century Caucasian Karabagh region 'blossom' rug. It is thought that this reproduction was woven in Turkey or possibly Eastern Europe during the early part of the 20th century, it has been suggested that it could be from the workshop of the master weaver Teodor Tuduc, who had workshops in Brasov, Romania; and produced copies of some of the greatest 16th - 18th century rugs.

The rug is of fine with with very soft wool, the foundation has hand spun ivory coloured wool warps, giving a very floppy handle.

The rug has some even wear and medium pile, it has been hand washed and is ready for use or display. The rug is suitable for normal domestic use.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Karabagh rugs originate from the southern Caucasus region, an area renowned for traditional hand-knotting techniques influenced by Armenian, Azerbaijani, and Persian weaving heritage. These rugs are particularly recognized for incorporating bold geometric structures alongside stylized floral and blossom patterns.

Traditional Karabagh carpets are hand-knotted using locally sourced wool yarn for the pile, woven onto a wool or cotton warp and weft foundation. Dyes were historically derived from natural plant and mineral sources, creating rich reds, blues, creams, and earthy ochre tones.

Authenticity is indicated by a flexible, hand-knotted weave, subtle variations in thread colour known as abrash, and natural wool wear across the pile. The reverse side typically displays clear, visible knot construction rather than a uniform machine-made backing.

A classic red Caucasian rug serves as a striking anchor on light oak or dark timber floorboards in living areas and hallways. Its warm palette and historic geometry pair effectively with neutral upholstered furniture or period mahogany pieces.

Regular maintenance requires gentle vacuuming using a suction-only nozzle rather than a rotating beater bar to prevent pile damage. Professional cleaning should be undertaken by a specialist oriental rug restorer, and the rug should be rotated periodically to ensure even wear.
