Antique Caucasian Karabagh Region 3 Medallion Kazak, Circa 1890.

19th century
Description

Size: 8ft 2in x 4ft 9in (250 x 145cm).

Antique South Caucasian Karabagh Kazak rug with triple medallion and a Kufic style border.

Circa 1900.

A good example of the traditional Karabagh region Kazak rug with three medallions. Many consider the medallions to be Turkmen inspired, but there are also links to the Caucasian 'dragon' rugs and the Chelaberd (eagle) Kazak rugs. The large medallions are well drawn and are on a soft terracotta field, this contains many tribal design elements including birds, animals, stars, everlasting knots and other tribal devices. The large ivory ground border is a variation of the Kufic design, notice how the colours change in the border at the lower end.

The rug is in good condition with even wear and good pile, there are a couple of fingertip spots of heavier wear.

The rug is suitable for normal domestic use.

The rug has been hand washed and is ready for use or display.

Stock Number: H-534.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Caucasian rugs originate from the Caucasus region and are recognised for bold geometric motifs, tribal emblems, and rich saturated dyes, predominantly produced during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

These carpets are traditionally hand-knotted using hand-spun sheep wool for both the pile and the foundation, creating a durable structure coloured with natural plant and mineral pigments.

Authentic examples feature hand-knotted knotting irregularities, abrash colour variations from batch-dyeing, full wool foundations, and distinctive regional geometric iconography such as latch-hooks or stepped medallions.

Position the rug as a focal foundation on neutral wood or stone flooring, pairing it with contemporary or mid-century furniture to create contrast and historical warmth.

Vacuum gently without a rotating brush head, rotate the carpet annually to ensure even wear, and clean immediate spills using cold water and specialized wool-safe detergents.
