Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Abrash banding in the terracotta field: colour variation from small-batch vegetable dyeing.
Subtle unevenness in the knotting: village hand-weaving on a traditional loom.
Softened pile across the central field: decades of gentle domestic tread.
Mellow tones in the blue and ochre motifs: colours settled through age.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This antique Heriz area rug originates from 1900 and exemplifies Persian traditional style. Formed from wool and cotton, the piece displays a terracotta red ground set against a patterned dark border. The decoration comprises geometric diamond medallions in light blue and yellow, accented by hooked motifs and smaller geometric elements along the borders. Visible signs of age include slight wear across the woven pile, while the palette incorporates ginger brown, navy, pink, and orange tones alongside the dominant red and blue. Measuring 127 cm by 184 cm, this floor covering suits placement in a living room, study, or hallway within an English country house interior. The flat textile construction allows for easy positioning beneath furniture or as a central decorative floor element.

Heriz rugs originate from the Heris region in northwestern Iran, near Mount Sabalan. Woven predominantly by village artisans, these rugs became famous during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries for their distinctive geometric interpretations of traditional floral Persian patterns.

Traditional Heriz carpets are hand-knotted using coarse wool pile spun onto a heavy cotton warp and weft foundation. The wool is historically dyed using natural plant and mineral sources, producing deep terracottas, indigos, and soft ochres.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-knotted construction visible on the underside, slight variations in weave uniformity, and subtle colour variations known as abrash. Unlike curvilinear city carpets, Heriz designs feature stylized, angular geometric medallions and bold rectilinear borders.

A geometric Heriz rug acts as a grounding anchor in both contemporary and classic schemes. Position it beneath modern neutral seating to add visual warmth and texture, or layer it over plain natural fibre mats for an eclectic look.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting without a rotary beater bar to protect the pile fibers. Address spills immediately by blotting with a clean cloth, rotate the rug annually to ensure even wear, and seek specialist cleaning when required.
