Set of 6 Victorian Willow Pattern Plates

Description

A matching set of 6 blue and white Willow pattern plates. Each is impressed with the maker's stamp "Dillwyn & Co Swansea" and this helps to accurately date them to the mid 19th Century.

They are in good condition for their age and display well. There are no major chips or cracks, just some minor surface marks and very small edge scuffs but nothing untoward or detrimental.

Approximate Dimensions :

Diameter : 10 1/4” (26cm)

The Willow Pattern was developed in England during the late 18th century, drawing inspiration from imported Chinese hand-painted porcelain. It depicts a narrative landscape incorporating a pagoda, a bridge with figures, a willow tree, and two birds in flight, becoming one of the most widely produced transferware designs of the 19th century.

Victorian transferware was produced by engraving a design onto a copper plate, which was then printed onto tissue paper using cobalt blue ink. The wet paper transfer was applied directly to the unglazed earthenware body before firing and glazing to seal the image permanently.

Authentic 19th-century pieces often feature minor alignment seams in the transfer print, stilt marks on the underside from kiln firing, and impressed or printed makers marks. The earthenware body typically shows slight natural crazing beneath the clear lead glaze due to age.
