FAQs

Gilt bronze, often known as ormolu, gained significant popularity in European interior design during the 18th century, particularly within French neoclassical and rococo movements, where they illuminated grand drawing rooms and halls.

These fixtures are typically crafted from cast bronze that has been finely chased and finished with a layer of gold leaf or mercury gilding, combining durability with a lustrous, decorative surface.

Authentic period pieces often feature hand-chased detailing, traditional casting flaws visible on the reverse, patination consistent with age, and construction methods such as threaded pins or screws rather than modern fixings.

They can be mounted on either side of a fireplace, mirror, or artwork to add architectural interest, warmth, and layered ambient lighting to both traditional and modern schemes.

Maintenance requires dusting gently with a soft, dry cloth. Chemical cleaners and abrasive polishes must be avoided to prevent stripping the delicate gilt surface.
