A Fine And Rare Compact George III Mahogany Breakfront Bookcase
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:Andreas de Jong Ltd.
English, ca. 1770
An exquisitely crafted ogee and arched split-acorn relief moulded cornice crowns this distinguished cabinet, immediately establishing a sense of architectural authority and refinement. Beneath, four astragal-glazed panelled doors open to reveal finely adjustable shelving, offering an elegant balance of display and function. A hinged secretaire drawer encloses a beautifully fitted interior, complemented by five additional internal drawers, while a pair of oval-panelled doors below are flanked by eight carefully graduated drawers. The entire composition is grounded by a stately plinth base, lending both presence and proportion.
Of particular note is the cabinet’s exceptional, untouched condition. Retaining its original surfaces and integrity, it stands as a remarkably honest survival, preserving the crispness of its carving and the purity of its original craftsmanship. Executed in the manner of the renowned St Martin’s Lane workshop of Thomas Chippendale, the piec...e reflects the disciplined elegance, balanced ornamentation, and masterful construction for which that celebrated workshop is revered.
