Dating from the 18th century, patch boxes were small, portable containers used by fashionable individuals to hold cosmetic patches made of silk or velvet, which were applied to the face to conceal blemishes or display political affiliations.

These items were handcrafted from sterling or coin silver, utilising fine wirework soldered into intricate openwork patterns, often featuring a plain central cartouche for engraving.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-pulled wire showing slight irregularities under magnification, period-appropriate hinges, and often lack standard full hallmarks due to their small size and exemption rules of the era.

Positioning small antique silver items on a dressing table tray, a velvet-lined display case, or a bookshelf adds a layer of historical interest and tactile contrast to contemporary spaces.

Silver filigree should be cleaned sparingly using a very soft brush and a mild, non-abrasive silver cleaning solution, avoiding harsh dips that can damage delicate solder joints or strip desired historical patina.
