Description

This beautiful antique Arts and Crafts bracelet is formed of five tumbled pieces of natural turquoise connected with a chain of solid nine-carat gold links. Secures with a nice sturdy oversized springring clasp.

The English Arts & Crafts movement (c. 1880-1910) championed hand made pieces with an emphasis on craftsmanship and the aesthetics of design to create beauty rather than intrinsically valuable materials such as diamonds. Natural baroque pearls, silver and uncut stones were considered preferable to precious gemstones and peacock colours and motifs were especially popular.

SIZE: 9 inches (23cm), a fairly long length. The turquoise nuggets are each unique but approximately 6-7mm.

WEIGHT: 4.8g.

MATERIALS: Nine-carat (375) gold, turquoise.

HALLMARKS/STAMPS: Stamped 9C.

CONDITION: Very good antique condition.

ERA: Victorian (c.1837-1901).

Turquoise gained immense popularity during the Victorian period, often symbolising enduring friendship and forget-me-not sentiments, frequently set in low-to-high carat yellow and rose gold.

These pieces typically feature low-carat gold, such as 9ct, combined with natural untreated or stabilised turquoise nuggets, secured with traditional spring-ring or bolt-ring clasps.

Authentic pieces often exhibit hand-carved links, subtle solder marks, period-appropriate clasps, and characteristic hallmark stamps denoting gold purity respective to their era of manufacture.

Antique bracelets can be layered alongside modern minimalist chains to create a curated, mixed-era textural contrast that highlights the distinct character of historical gemstones.

Turquoise is a porous gemstone that should never be submerged in water, exposed to harsh chemicals, or cleaned with ultrasonic devices; instead, wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth.
