19th century
For Sale by AC Silver
Description

A stunning, fine and impressive antique hardstone and 18 carat yellow gold intaglio ring; part of our Georgian jewellery collection.

This exceptional, fine and impressive ring has been crafted in 18ct yellow gold.

The substantial antique gold ring setting displays a stunning oval hardstone, ornamented with a carved intaglio.

The intaglio bears a figural profile, featuring wavy, tied back hair.

The surrounding setting is plain and unembellished, melding with the incurved shaped ring shoulders and blending seamlessly with the ring shank.

This antique gent’s ring is hallmarked to the interior of the shank with the maker's mark (T.H), the gold guarantee mark (crown), the 18ct gold mark (18), the Birmingham Assay Office mark (anchor) and the date letter for 1811 (n).

This Georgian intaglio ring in yellow gold combines finely carved artistry with historical depth, making it a meaningful choice for birthdays or anniversaries. Its warmth and craftsmanship appeal to those who value heritage and sentiment.

Images do not always reflect the true colour and brilliance of gemstones and diamonds. The video however provides a truer representation of the actual colour and showcases each stone.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian intaglio ring features a carved gemstone set into a precious metal band, where the image is recessed below the surface. Popular during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, these rings often drew inspiration from classical antiquity and Grand Tour souvenirs.

These rings were predominantly crafted using high-karat gold, such as 18ct yellow gold, paired with hardstones like carnelian, sard, chalcedony, agate, or quartz suitable for fine gem engraving.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-engraved carving details visible under magnification, characteristic closed-back or solid bezel mountings, and historical gold hallmarks or date letters corresponding to the era.

Intaglio rings are commonly worn as statement signet rings on the pinky or index finger, or stacked alongside understated modern gold bands to highlight the historical carved gemstone.

Clean the piece gently using warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft-bristled brush to remove dust from the carved recesses. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, harsh chemicals, and sudden thermal shocks to protect the hardstone.
