Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ware manufactured in the Arita area and shipped from the port of Imari, traditionally characterised by underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron-red enamel and gold embellishments.

Traditional Imari ceramics are crafted from kaolin porcelain clay, painted with cobalt blue before initial firing, and decorated with overglaze enamels and gilding prior to a second, lower-temperature kiln firing.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-painted variations in decoration, slight irregularities in the glaze, occasional spur marks on the base from kiln supports, and a distinct palette of cobalt blue and iron-red.
