Description

An authentic Imperial Russian Orthodox cross pendant in solid 56 zolotnik gold (approx. 14ct), a true wearable relic of 19th-century devotion and craftsmanship. Crisp pre-kokoshnik hallmarks place it in St Petersburg in 1864, with the city emblem and the date clearly struck, the “56” gold standard, and an initial mark “??” — the kind of clear, early stamping collectors actively look for because it anchors the piece firmly within the Imperial assay system.

The front presents a refined Crucifixion in the slender, icon-like manner typical of Russian devotional art, set against a matte, finely textured ground framed by a neat beaded border. Above the head is the Old Slavonic inscription «????» — the Russian church form of “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews”, far less commonly encountered than the Latin INRI and immediately recognisable to collectors of Orthodox jewellery.

The reverse bears the traditional blessing «????? ? ???????» (“Save and protect”), framed with elegant foliate scrollwork. The original suspension ring is also carefully finished, engraved all around with foliage so it reads as part of the design rather than an afterthought. This is a serious antique: understated, deeply cultural, and unmistakably Imperial — an exceptional heirloom gift for anyone who values Russian history, faith, and authentic early hallmarked gold.

Dimensions: 3.6 × 2.3 cm (without ring); 5.3 cm (with ring)

Weight: 4.6 g

An Imperial Russian Orthodox cross pendant is a devotional Christian item crafted within the Russian Empire, typically featuring distinct traditional iconography such as the eight-pointed cross or specific depictions of the crucifixion.

These items were predominantly forged from high-purity gold, often marked with historical zolotnik assay standards, and frequently decorated via hand-engraving, relief casting, or enamel work.

Authentic items generally feature verifiable imperial assay hallmarks, makers marks, and traditional zolotnik fineness stamps corresponding to Russian mint standards of the period.

Such historic items are commonly worn on a compatible gold chain as a statement necklace or displayed within a glass-topped collectors case as part of a curated study display.

Preservation requires storing items in soft, lined compartments away from harsh chemicals, cleaning only with a microfibre cloth, and avoiding ultrasonic cleaners on pieces with delicate chased surfaces.
