Vintage Micromosaic Earrings on 9ct Gold Wires

Description

These elegant vintage earrings feature Italian micromosaics formed of tiny tessarae (glass tiles) in flower bouquet designs set into a black enamelled ground. The frames surrounding the mosaic plaques are gold-tone metal while the ear wires are solid nine-carat gold.

• Condition: Very good vintage/antique condition; there is a little wear to the enamel edges at the sides of the plaques and a little discolouration to the gold but neither is very noticeable to the naked eye.

• Fixing: Nine-carat gold lever-back ear wires.

• Hallmarks/Stamps: 9K on both wires.

• Era: Mid-20th century, possibly antique with later wires.

• Size: The plaques measure 2 x 2.2cm, 4cm total drop from the top of the ear wire.

• Weight: 9.1g.

Micromosaic jewellery originated in Rome during the late 18th century, gaining immense popularity among European aristocrats participating in the Grand Tour. Artisans assembled thousands of microscopic glass tiles to create detailed miniature pictures inspired by classical antiquities and nature.

Traditional pieces are crafted using small glass or enamel rods called tesserae, set into a mortar matrix within a metal, stone, or glass base. Settings were frequently made from gold, silver, or gilt brass to secure the mosaic panel.

Authentic period pieces feature extremely fine, tightly packed tesserae with minimal visible mortar, often revealing subtle hand-cut irregularities under magnification. Later vintage items may feature slightly larger tesserae and modern wire closures or hallmarked settings.
